The English language, what’s in it for you? Here are the many reasons I celebrate English:
- Yes, I make my living as a writer in a Fortune 200 corporation. I’ve tried other lines of work, but writing is what I do. Thank you English language for my job.
- My hobby? You guessed it. Writing. I’m taking a few days off from my day job to read through the first proof of my debut novel, Washed Up.
- I’m proud to tell everyone I know about my linguist son, studying theoretical linguists at the University of Tromsø, Norway. Okay, I’m not exactly sure what theoretical linguistics is, but it is, in general, a study of the properties of language. He also knows a whole bunch of languages, but, of course, loves his native English.
- I was part of a panel presenting at the University of St. Catherine today on the topic of: what to do with your English major after graduation. I had a few things to say about that.
So people, get out there. Talk amongst yourselves. Celebrate the English Language!
